Part of my research for a book I am working on for publication in autumn 2010 (details to be announced in due course) has taken me into the lost world of the seaside postcard. Once a familiar sight at every British resort, they presented a wonderful range of innuendo-laden one-liners that sometimes fell foul of censorship committees and were banned, with images by artists such as the great Donald McGill and ‘Trow’. Over the coming months, I will present a selection of examples from my collection and explore some of the themes that were featured in the cards, such as those below. |
