Ian Grant (now Encyclopedia Britannica’s UK supremo) and I were working together at Mitchell Beazley, he on the staff and me as a freelance editor. We noticed that Comet Kohoutek was heading our way, and astronomers promised it would be one of the most spectacular ones ever seen. We offered to produce an illustrated book about comets for our employers, but when they declined, we decided to set up a company – Ash & Grant – and write and publish it ourselves. The comet itself was a flop, but the book was a modest success and we found ourselves with a publishing company, which occupied us both for the next five years. Coincidentally, working alongside us at Mitchell Beazley, and with much grander plans for their futures, were Christopher Dorling and Peter Kindersley, who went on to establish Dorling Kindersley the following year.
I intend adding an Ash & Grant tribute annexe to this site in due course.
